Seed orchards

IUFRO WP 2.09.01 Seed Orchards hold a conference from September 8 to 11, 2009 in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.

There were 92 participants. 25 oral presentations and 45 posters were presented. Among overseas visitors, Sweden had the largest delegation.

A business meeting was hold. It was decided that the next WP seed orchard meeting is planned for 2012 with Nebi Bilir as responsible. On behalf of the WP, a book about seed orchards will be edited by Prof. Yousry A. El-Kassaby (y.el-kassaby@ubc.ca).

resented contributions are offered to be published in a conference proceedings. Papers should be submitted before November 30, 2009 to kangks@forest.go.kr

The contribution must have been presented by one of the authors to be accepted for the proceedings. The expected format of the manuscript is seen after the report from business meeting. But, do not bother too much with the format, the editors will handle it if it is needed to modify.

♠ Scope of the conference
The aim of the conference was to present recent advances and to review the state-of-the-art concerning, techniques and methods related to genetics of seeds and seed orchards; in particular the link between long-term breeding and seed orchards, management of seed production; flowering; injuries and protection; economics; seed management, physiology and technology, seed dormancy; testing and storage; gene conservation. Aspects could impact on forests and ecosystems at the stand, the landscape, the national and the global level. Of special interest is seed orchards in the perspective of changing environment and global warming. The main theme of the conference was suggested to be seed orchards and the link to long-term tree breeding in response to climate change

♠ Miscellaneous

Seed orchards are the most important interface between forestry and tree breeding. Seed orchards are one of the tools in the fight against global warming, and a better seed orchard means a better future. During the conference, an IUFRO WP business meeting will be held to discuss and exchange ideas about the future, a seed orchard book, next meeting etc.
